Creative Writing Workshops

I create high-energy, low-pressure writing workshops for classrooms, libraries, and community groups. Looking for something specific? I’d love to develop a hands-on experience tailored to your group’s age, interests, or curriculum needs. Below are examples of recent workshops I’ve developed—just some of the many options I can modify to fit your group, age range, or setting.

TEEN WRITING WORKSHOP: STORY SWATCHES

A creative writing workshop where color sparks the story.

In this imaginative writing workshop, students use paint swatches, word prompts, and a simple journaling technique to unlock personal memories and spark creative storytelling. Through playful, low-pressure exercises, they’ll explore how color connects to mood, memory, and meaning—while building confidence in their writing voice. And, of course, having a lot of fun! Whether students are brand new to writing or already budding storytellers, this session is sure to spark creative joy.

Perfect for teens and adaptable for a variety of age groups or settings.

This was fun! I liked being able to express my creativity in new ways that I wouldn’t of thought of trying.

In this class I learned things you write down don’t have to come from your mind. They can come from what you touch, hear, smell, [and] feel.

BLACKOUT POETRY WORKSHOPS

Play poetry hide-and-seek at a workshop created with the most reluctant poets in mind!

Blackout Poetry, a form of found poetry, can help students overcome overwhelm, clear mental clutter, and face the “blank” page with confidence. By searching through someone else's words in a book, magazine, or newspaper, writers find new poems, new stories, new art! After an intro to the form, students are prompted to search texts, will be surprised by new ideas they find, then black out the words they don't need. What's left? A unique piece of writing they probably wouldn't have "found" any other way!

Using inspirational pieces of blackout poetry, students may choose to illustrate their poems in a variety of ways, including sketch, acrylic paint markers, coloring, or collage.

CUSTOM WORKSHOPS

Have a different age group, theme, or format in mind?

Whether you’re planning a library event, a classroom mini-unit, or a special one-time session, I’ll work with you to create something meaningful, fun, and age-appropriate.

Let’s collaborate to bring a love of storytelling to your group!
